First
Baptist Church is located in Mansfield, a small college town
nestled in the hills of northern Pennsylvania. Rich in
heritage, the town is celebrating its sesquicentennial this
year (2007). The town and what is now known as Mansfield University
were both officially established in 1857, fourteen years after
the Tioga Baptist Association officially recognized our church.
Daniel L. Sherwood, one of our churches ten founders, also
had a hand in organizing the original seminary school (now
MU).

| Of
course, Mansfield itself is the home of many great events. Mansfield
University always offers various forms of entertainment
including lectures, theatre, concerts and sports events.
The town’s unique attraction is the
Fabulous 1890’s Festival, a vestige of the
original Mansfield Fair, taking place the last weekend of
September. The event commemorates the world’s very
first night football game which originally took place
in Mansfield September 28, 1892. Thousands of people, many
in period costume, gather in Mansfield for the game as well
as music from the University band, fireworks and a reenactment
of the famous Tabernacle Service.
